3. Lightning Rod

Function: Serves as the "antennae" of the lightning protection system, directly intercepting the lightning leader and attracting the lightning current.

Early discharge lightning rods (ESE): These claim to create a stronger upward leader, thereby expanding the protection range, but their effectiveness is subject to academic debate.

4. Grounding System

Function: Rapidly discharging the massive lightning current into the earth, it is a crucial component of a lightning protection system. Without good grounding, a lightning protection tower is useless.

Main components: a grounding body, a grounding down conductor, and a grounding grid.

1. Lightning Arrest: The tower's tall, needle-shaped structure attracts lightning, protecting the protected object from direct strikes.

2. Lightning Current Conduction: After lightning strikes, the lightning current flows through the tower's body and, via the down conductor, to the grounding device, ultimately discharging it safely into the earth.

3. Side Strike Protection: The tower also has a certain degree of side strike protection, providing some protection against side strikes.
